As your organization continues to grow and evolve, your technological needs will naturally change over time. This is especially true when it comes to the networking needs of your employees. “How to Network” is unfortunately a question that does not have an easy answer. The situation will vary wildly depending on exactly what it is that you need to accomplish on a daily basis.

One thing is for sure; however, a failure to properly plan for your networking needs, is one of the biggest sources of lost productivity for businesses of all types and sizes.

Necessary Hardware

One of the most important factors to consider when trying to adequately determine your networking needs has to do with the types of available hardware that you will need to purchase. This is another factor that will be based largely on your own specific situation and factors like how many employees you have, how many computers you’re using and more.

If you run a small business with one employee and a single desktop computer, for example, your networking needs will not likely include a server rack. That situation will change, however, as you employ more people and purchase more network connected pieces of equipment.

Existing Infrastructure

Another one of the most important considerations that you can make when it comes to adequately planning for your networking needs has to do with the existing infrastructure that you have in place. Many of the available hardware options will be largely dependent on not only the type of networking setup that you already have but the equipment that you’ve purchased in the past.

If you’ve built a WAN infrastructure in your business, for example, you will require different types of hardware than a traditional LAN (local area network) setup. As your organization continues to grow and evolve, your network requirements will need to do the same. This does not necessarily involve replacing what you already have and instead most commonly involves upgrading as your needs change.

Size and Scale

Another one of the most important factors that you need to closely examine when determining your networking needs, is the consideration of the size and scale of the network that you’re attempting to build. This will require you to look at a number of important factors, chief among these being the total number of computers, networked devices and other pieces of hardware that you need to be able to access the network with.

Another important factor that you’ll need to address is the design of your office. If you’re operating in a space that is quite large, you’ll likely need to deploy a combination of local area network and wireless network technologies to help make sure that everyone is connected at all times.

The size and scale of your network will also require you to look closely at your own budget. Sometimes you’ll need to scale back the network itself to meet the requirements of your budget if expanding the amount of available money for this purpose is not an option.
